On s'éloignera ainsi des discussions sur sa participation au " tournant linguistique " : il a en effet plutôt travaillé à gagner à l'histoire et à ses opérations de connaissance des faits volontiers abandonnés à d'autres disciplines, des écrits jusque-là étudiés dans des perspectives uniquement érudites ou religieuses. L'histoire selon Certeau est un lent et méticuleux travail érudit " dans les salles d'Archives ". C'est un discours, la mise en mots de ce travail érudit, la mise en disponibilité d'une connaissance et d'une reconnaissance du passé comme passé. C'est aussi une décision, un volo, un acte préalable, un choix, une expérience transformatrice vécue au présent, au je. Si présents dans son style, les guillemets sont chez lui une marque de l'acte de langage. Autrement dit, ils sont un acte de langage, un acte avec le langage. Ils ne marquent pas tant la mise à distance, la mise en doute, que le volo préalable, la mise au je du choix de l'histoire. | ||

Very specific to his style, quotation marks are a mark of speech acts; in other words, they are an act with language.
