We speak of Meister Eckhart as a unique voice in Western medieval thought: profound, poetic; rooted in tradition but with a gift for bringing startling imagery to his teachings that exposes the radical nature of the Christian message. 520 |a We speak of Meister Eckhart as a unique voice in Western medieval thought: profound, poetic; rooted in tradition but with a gift for bringing startling imagery to his teachings that exposes the radical nature of the Christian message. As a teacher, he speaks without preconceptions or prejudice; bringing the same boldness of rhetorical style and message to all audiences irrespective of context. Yet Eckhart’s fusion of life and learning is in many ways characteristically Dominican: the act of preaching and the formation of preachers being central to the mission and vocation of the Order. After examining contemporary expectations and theories of Dominican sermon-making, and what Eckhart has to say in his works about the act and art of preaching, I will focus on Eckhart’s German Sermon 22 in order to explore in detail the flavour and operation of his rhetorical style.
