Description
Résumé:Proclaiming the Gospel: An endeavour with universal scope This is the second part of a two-part study in which the exclusivist measures in the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk, which bar people of colour from attending regular Sunday services, are evaluated. The first pail, under the title: ‘May "whites onfyl" worship here?’ investigated the historical circumstances that gave rise to such measures and assessed the arguments for maintaining them. This second part of the study covers matters such as perceptions and group behaviour within the church as social group, the church as spiritual as well as social entity, the concepts of 'covenant' and ‘volkskerk’, and exclusivism versus inclusivity. In particular, the way in which the concepts of ‘volkskerk’ and ‘covenant’ are combined by some theologians of the church to provide grounds for excluding some categories of people from worship services, is challenged as being theologically unsound
