The Digital Reconstruction of the Herculaneum Boat (79 CE)

Description
Summary:This paper discusses a Roman boat discovered in an unusual context: stranded on the shore of Herculaneum, destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. The Herculaneum boat retains two-thirds of its hull up to the caprail. The outer part was initially examined by Richard Steffy at the time of its discovery in 1982. The objective of this present project was to conduct a thorough analysis of the construction characteristics and deformations using 3D photogrammetry to correct hull deformations and reposition displaced components to produce a hypothetical digital reconstruction of the boat.
