Description
Summary:Although the Golden Age of Whaling (1815–60) is among the best documented periods in history, the French trade that developed in Le Havre, France, during that time is largely understudied. The identification of the wreck of the French whaling bark Asia at Guam, therefore, presents a unique opportunity to explore French whaling in the 19th century. This paper outlines the history of the fishery and provides an overview of Asia’s career as part of the Le Havre fleet. The material remains documented at the shipwreck site are summarized with correlations to the operational history of the whale fishery.
