| Summary: | Voluntary reclusion is an ancient and established form of penitential religious life at the extremes of eremitism, that had its heyday in the 13th and 14th centuries, linked to the development of cities across Europe. Cells of recluses were found in all European cities, scattered along roads, near bridges, city gates, walls, churches. The first part of this paper investigates the influence of mendicant identity on this "unconventionally mendicant" form of religious life, bearing in mind the kind of sources useful for reconstructing it and its many organisational, practical, topographical, relational, motivational and patrimonial aspects and, finally, the weight of the lay component. The second part of this paper, on the other hand, investigates the influence of voluntary reclusion on mendicant orders, and in particular the Franciscan order and the Poor Clares, through a deep perusal of Franciscan sources. |
