| Summary: | Jerome’s Commentary on Galatians is the most learned exposition (in Latin) of this Pauline epistle to survive from the patristic period. Previous source-critical studies of it have focused exclusively on Jerome’s implementation of Greek patristic exegesis. As a result, scholars have tended to de-emphasize its Latin character. In the present article Andrew Cain adduces nearly twenty phraseological echoes of the writings of Tertullian, Cyprian, and Lactantius and he argues that in fact the Latin patristic tradition has shaped the literary texture of the Commentary far more extensively than was previously thought. Le Commentaire sur Galatiens de Jérôme est, sur cette épître paulinienne, l’exègèse la plus érudite dont on dispose en latin à l’époque patristique. Les études de ses sources, traditionnellement, se sont concentrées sur la manière dont Jérôme utilise l’exégèse patristique grecque. Par conséquent, on a tendu à sous estimer le caractère latin du Commentaire. Dans cet article, Andrew Cain cite une vingtaine de passages faisant écho, textuellement, à des écrits de Tertullien, Cyprien, et Lactance, et il démontre que la tradition patristique latine a en réalité formé la texture littéraire du Commentaire, beaucoup plus profondément qu’on ne l’a cru auparavant. |
