Augustine chiefly elaborates on two arguments that had been seldom used by the previous Fathers, namely the patristic and the liturgical arguments, both of them depending on divine inspiration. The concept of grace is a useful key to understand Augustine’s conception of heresy and his attitude towards the heretics: as a free gift from God, grace allows for the conversion of heretics. While heresy is reprehensible, the heretics can be cured and they can return to the Church they had left. | ||
| 520 | |a Sur la base du Contra Iulianum, sont étudiés les critères utilisés par Augustin pour définir ce qu’est une hérésie, ce qu’est l’orthodoxie. L’évêque d’Hippone reprend plusieurs éléments de l’hérésiologie traditionnelle, mais il en ouvre cependant les perspectives en refusant certains principes, comme la diabolisation de l’adversaire, préférant d’autres aspects tels que l’incohérence ou l’orgueil de l’hérétique. Augustin développe deux arguments peu utilisés par les Pères précédents, l’argument patristique et l’argument liturgique, qui sont liés, car ils relèvent tous deux de l’inspiration divine. Le concept de grâce vient éclairer sa conception de l’hérésie et de l’attitude à avoir envers l’hérétique. En effet, la grâce, accordée gratuitement par Dieu, peut permettre à un hérétique de se convertir. Si l’hérésie reste condamnable, l’homme qui la porte peut être guéri et revenir dans le sein de l’Église qu’il a quittée. | ||
