All the arguments often put forward to favour a later date are not more convincing, but one should admit with T. D. Barnes that Eusebius’ text has generally been misunderstood. The only certainty is that the Contra Christianos was written between the publication of a work on which it depends, the History of the Ptolemies by Callinicus Sutorius (between the end of 270 AD and summer 272 AD), and the death of Porphyry himself, around 305 AD. | ||

Les arguments parfois proposés en faveur d’une datation plus basse ne sont pas tous plus convaincants, mais il faut convenir avec T. D. Barnes que le texte d’Eusèbe a été en général mal compris. La seule certitude, c’est que le Contra Christianos a été composé entre la publication d’un ouvrage dont il dépend, l’Histoire des Ptolémées de Callinicus Sutorius (entre la fin 270 et l’été 272), et la mort de Porphyre lui-même, vers 305. | ||
