The study of these figures makes it possible to recount how one moves from the deteriorated representations of the circle and the straight line to the geometric figures which are more and more purified-from the wheel of Fortune to the circles whose Providence is the centre, in a process where the neoplatonic interpretation of the Timaeus plays an important role. This path corresponds to the progress that Boethius, the prisoner, accomplished under the direction of Philosophy; however these figures also refer to the art of dialectic speech employed by the latter, which alternates linear and circular sequences of reasoning. | ||

L’étude de ces figures permet de retracer comment l’on passe, au sein du texte, de représentations dégradées du cercle et de la droite à des figures géométriques de plus en plus épurées - de la roue de la Fortune aux cercles dont la Providence est le centre, dans un processus où l’exégèse néoplatonicienne du Timée joue un grand rôle. Ce parcours correspond au progrès que le prisonnier Boèce accomplit sous la direction de la Philosophie ; mais ces figures renvoient aussi à l’art du discours dialectique employé par cette dernière, qui alterne enchaînements linéaires et circulaires des raisonnements. | ||
