It is a risky and always potentially explosive conversation that demands theological attention to the complex and multiple legacies of empire and colonialism affecting Great Britain and her former colonies and territories. As a Caribbean Contextual and Practical theologian, I want to make the claim that theological conversations around reparations must not only take account of the ethical dimension, for example, the question of justice in light of ‘wealth extraction’; but that more fundamentally, the conversation must be situated around the concept of ‘wealth distraction’, or to put it another way, we must consider the concept of idolatry. Furthermore, the deceptive nature of mammon necessitates a deeply reflexive approach to considering the kinds of Christian imagination we currently inhabit when facing conversations around reparations. | ||
