Tout en s'appuyant sur les conceptions et les auteurs protestants libéraux, ils ont cependant développé leur propre compréhension de l'expérience religieuse. Cet engagement s'est traduit par des modifications significatives du concept. Alors que von Hügel a mis l'accent sur l'expérience religieuse dans le cadre de la religion institutionnelle et historique tout en conservant sa doctrine métaphysique, Loisy a limité le rôle de l'expérience religieuse au profit de l'interprétation historique, de l'intuition morale et de l'action. Bien que von Hügel et Loisy aient divergé sur les questions métaphysiques et sur leur appartenance à l'Église catholique romaine, il semble approprié de parler de deux manières catholiques de penser l'expérience religieuse. | ||
