Description
Summary:The advantages of a controlled interpretation of grammatical constructions through a coherent linguistic framework will be illustrated in terms of an analysis of what is known as the ethical dative in Biblical Hebrew. As traditional perspectives fail to provide insight into the structure of the ethical dative, it is suggested that the mechanisms of Full Interpretation and Binding Theory, as well as the assumptions on clitic configurations within a Chomskyan principle and parameter approach in particular, may provide a framework for the analysis. In the present analysis it is submitted that in the case of the ethical dative, the preposition-pronominal suffix combination is cliticised.
