Description
Summary:Luke’s Presentation Narrative (Luke 2:25-38) introduces the figure of the prophet Anna and includes some accompanying biographical details, notably her identification as the daughter of Phanuel (Luke 2:36). This article considers the significance of that identification and how it might function as an intertext with Gen 32:22-32, where Jacob’s seeing God occasions the naming of the location as Peniel/Penuel. Luke’s Phanuel reference works as a composite allusion to the Genesis narrative and correlates with several themes found in the earlier text—the importance of "seeing," the ambiguity of the encounter, and its importance in respect to naming (both for Peniel and Israel). Both Luke 2:25-38 and Gen 32:22-32 elucidate encounters with human and divine figures, but without fully resolving the mystery between the two dimensions.
