Problems in connection with verbal forms in the Amarna letters from Jerusalem, with special reference to EA 286

Long ago Albright and later his student, Moran, pointed out that in various instances the scribe of cAbdi-Heba of Jerusalem diverged widely from other Canaanite scribes. The ""northerliness"" of the Jerusalem letters is evident from both the writing and the language. In addition,...

520 |a Long ago Albright and later his student, Moran, pointed out that in various instances the scribe of cAbdi-Heba of Jerusalem diverged widely from other Canaanite scribes. The ""northerliness"" of the Jerusalem letters is evident from both the writing and the language. In addition, Rainey called him a ""scatterbrained scribe"". In this paper the characteristics of the Jerusalem scribe and his letters are studied and verbal forms in the West Semitized Amarna tablets are analysed, with special reference to EA 286. The conclusion is that despite the Assyrianisms and other characteristics of the letters which are peculiar to this scribe, the hybrid character of the letters from Jerusalem is evident. They offer us good examples of what has been called a ""Canaano-Akkadian mixed language"".
