| Summary: | This article critically examines the pontificate of Pope Francis from the perspective of a Catholic Asian theologian. Following his election in 2013, Francis introduced significant pastoral and theological shifts, sparking both widespread acclaim and deep concern among clergy and laity. His approach to issues such as moral theology, ecumenism, interfaith dialogue, liturgical practices, and church governance were met with diverse reactions, reflecting a complex interplay between tradition and reform. This study evaluates his main pastoral thrusts for the Catholic Church, assessing their implications for church doctrine and discipline. By analyzing both the support and the criticism his efforts have received, this study seeks to provide a balanced perspective on his legacy and attempts to assess whether his papacy actually aligned with or departed from the doctrinal continuity of the Catholic Church. It also examines in detail the reception of Francis's reform agenda by the Catholic Church in Asia. |
