L'étude de ces lettres permet ainsi de comprendre combien la conception traditionnelle de l'État défendue par ces différents interlocuteurs païens se fonde sur une conception de la res publica nourrie de la lecture de Cicéron et sur une conception religieuse hénothéiste qui traduit une influence d'auteurs comme Apulée et Porphyre. | ||
| 520 | |a An examination of the correspondence of pagan authors preserved in the Augustinian epistolary corpus sheds light on the issues that emerged with the increasing influence of Christianity within the Roman state at the end of the fourth and beginning of the fifth centuries AD. These questions pertain to both the institutional and legal processes that were underway at the time, as evidenced by the significance of imperial legislation against pagan rites, which resulted in riots, and to the philosophical presuppositions that informed these processes. A study of these letters demonstrates the extent to which the traditional conception of the state, as espoused by these various pagan interlocutors, was predicated on two key elements: firstly, a conception of the res publica informed by Ciceronian thought; and secondly, a henotheistic religious conception that reflected the influence of authors such as Apuleius and Porphyry. | ||
