First, each of the two books is known in two forms: one appears in the Hebrew Bible, the other is attested earlier by Josephus. Then, the examination of specific difficulties relating to the Law and to the chronology enables us to conclude that the extant narrative is in fact a composition of the Hasmonean period. The main characters Ezra and Nehemiah are presented as defenders of the Law of Moses, but they introduce reforms of Babylonian origin which are far away from it. | ||
