| Summary: | This article on Old Testament Theology aims at discussing three issues. They are: What approach or approaches to Old Testament Theology would do justice to the unique nature of the Old Testament; the question whether historical interpretation of the Hebrew text still has a place in the formation of Old Testament Theological ideas; and finally, whether Old Testament Theology should concern itself with the question of meaning. These issues will be discussed in dialogue with the endeavours of both Brueggemann and Gerstenberger. In 1997 Brueggemann wrote an Old Testament Theology applying a court metaphor which to his mind allowed him to do justice to the plurality of voices in the Old Testament. Gerstenberger, in 2002, followed a different approach and promoted the idea of theologies of the Old Testament which he thought would do justice to the unique nature of the Old Testament. |
