RT Article T1 The book of Esther: A neglected paradigm for dealing with the state JF Old Testament essays VO 10 IS 1 SP 18 OP 26 A1 Firth, David G. LA English YR 1997 UL https://ixtheo.de/Record/1929964900 AB Although a number of different paradigms in the Old Testament for dealing with the state has been examined in recent years, the model offered by the book of Esther has been largely ignored. The model offered by this book is highly subtle, including the elements of critical acceptance and critical rejection of the state. One can also find such elements in other texts. Where the model offered by the book of Esther goes further, is that it also offers elements of self-criticism, suggesting that where the people of God become too closely enmeshed in the state they lose their critical distance and may themselves become the problem.
