Summary: | Special Edition: Understanding the Old Testament in South Africa. The following paper argues for a ideological-materialist reading of the Old Testament which is not based on Marxist principles but takes its point of departure from struggles between opposing groups within the Old Testament itself, exemplified in the conflict between Yahweh and other gods. It suggests a reading of the Old Testament from the perspective of the poor and oppressed and uses 'Ideologiekritik' and other sociological methods as important tools to recognise the conflicting voices. Leading questions are provided by the present-day context. This approach to the Old Testament does not aim at the position of a disinterested observer but is committed, and consciously takes sides. |
