Or, au profit exclusif de documents produits par l'aristocratie lettrée, cette historiographie néglige souvent l'épigraphie, qui montre pourtant que le daimon garde ses fonctions traditionnelles et que la globalisation culturelle reste limitée à une certaine élite. La présence du thème du démon dans la philosophie sophistique résulte d'une tentative de re-politisation de la parole aristocratique, que le régime impérial a largement dépossédée de son pouvoir. La démonologie peut dès lors être pensée comme une religiosité d'élite mettant en abyme la fonction sociale de cette même élite. | ||
| 520 | |a The vogue of demonology has often been linked in historiography with a broad evolution of religiosity in the High Roman Empire, i.e., a trend to syncretism and henotheism under the influence of imperialism. This historiography, however, focuses exclusively on documents produced by the well-read aristocracy, and often neglects epigraphic sources; the latter show that the daimon retained its traditional functions and that cultural globalisation remained limited to a certain elite. The presence of the demonic theme in sophistic philosophy is the result of an attempt to re-politicise aristocratic speech, which had been largely stripped of its power by the imperial regime. Demonology can therefore be seen as an elite religiosity that mirrors the social function of this very elite. | ||
