The altarpiece was painted by Claude Vignon, while the rest of the cycle was created by Jean de Saint-Igny for one of the great devotees of the time: Geneviève Fayet-Goussault, a close friend of Jean-Pierre Camus and Saint Vincent de Paul. Drawing on the spirituality of the commissioner and on the main treatises on prayer available in early 17th century France, the study proposes an experimental reading of the main painting, dedicated to what is generally presented as the inaugural work of meditative practice: The Agony of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. | ||
