In particular, it seeks to understand how the production, distribution, and reception of hagiographic material (written, visual, and performative) served as a tool for the implementation of “monastic” dynamics of legitimation. This is accomplished by pursuing and developing a two-fold approach. At an empirical level, the volume expands our scholarly understanding of the cross-cultural processes that characterize religious communities’ notions of identity. At a meta-level, it furthers a re-evaluation of our taxonomy as it challenges established notions of categories such as “monk/monastic” and “hagiography.” OP 144 SN 978-1-80270-216-3 K1 RELIGION / Monasticism K1 HISTORY / Medieval K1 RELIGION / Christian Church / History K1 HISTORY / Asia / General K1 HISTORY / World K1 HISTORY / Europe / Medieval K1 RELIGION / Christianity / Denominations K1 RELIGION / Christianity / General K1 Monasticism K1 Hagiography K1 Comparative Religions K1 Identity Formation K1 pre-modern world K1 comparative religions K1 hagiography K1 identity formation K1 monasticism K1 Aufsatzsammlung DO 10.1515/9781802702163
