| 520 | |a This article moves outside the conventional methodologies of visual and literary studies and material bibliography to produce a reading of the Angoysses douloureuses that demonstrates how the text and the material object of the book can be read together to recreate inscribed reading practices, including those of women readers in addition to the reading communities (of women) evoked by the text alone. The narrative of the Angoysses douloureuses displays a preoccupation with representing the materiality of the text throughout the work by means of letters exchanged between the lovers, a single, continuous narrative written by the heroine Helisenne, a manuscript book recuperated from beside her body, and a printed book whose circulation in Paris was sanctioned by Jupiter. This interest in the text’s material form goes beyond representational issues to include woodcuts and chapter headings, showing the capacity of representation to collaborate with the materiality of the printed book in producing meaning. These material elements variously show us how the text seeks to conform to the convention of publishing women’s writing posthumously while also indicating how materiality might both anticipate and shape reading practices. They also allow us to read the material book as one that delineates the problematics of a female-authored work circulating in print at this early point in the sixteenth century., Cet article délaisse les méthodologies conventionnelles des études visuelles et littéraires et de la bibliographie matérielle, et propose une lecture des Angoysses douloureuses qui montre comment le texte et le livre matériel peuvent être lus ensemble de façon à recréer des pratiques de lecture, notamment celles des lectrices féminines, de même que celles des communautés de lecture (féminines) que le texte évoque. Tout au long desAngoysses douloureuses, le récit témoigne d’un souci de représenter la matérialité du texte au moyen de lettres échangées entre les amants, d’un récit unique et continu écrit par l’héroïne Hélisenne, d’un livre manuscrit récupéré à côté de son corps et d’un livre imprimé dont la circulation à Paris a été sanctionnée par Jupiter. Cette importance accordée à la matérialité du texte va au-delà des questions de représentation et inclut des gravures sur bois et des titres de chapitres, illustrant ainsi comment la représentation peut s’associer à la matérialité du livre imprimé pour produire du sens. Ces éléments matériels nous montrent comment le texte cherche à respecter la convention consistant à publier les écrits féminins à titre posthume, tout en révélant comment la matérialité peut à la fois anticiper et façonner les pratiques de lecture. Ils nous indiquent également en quoi le livre matériel cerne les problématiques d’un ouvrage écrit par une femme et circulant sous forme imprimée dans les premières décennies du XVIe siècle. | ||
