In a comparative examination of the Eucharistic Prayer texts of the Basilios Anaphora and the Canon Romanus, which are representative of the patristic heritage, it is argued that the theology of consecration and sacrifice of the Mass, which is decisive for the Latin Church and culminates in the idea of a 'post-consecratory oblation', is in fact the result of a secondary interpretation of the Canon Romanus. With regard to the current standardization of the Roman Rite, this results in a 'performative chiasm': in fact, the preconciliar liturgy -- contrary to the textually ascertainable theology in the background -- is celebrated as a 'sacrificial liturgy'; -- the conciliar revised liturgy, on the other hand -- despite its textual and rubrical adherence to the scholastic logic of consecration and sacrifice -- is usually staged as a 'meal celebration'. The respective performance only partially converges with the theology of the texts used. In the light of this 'chiasm' of text and performance, proposals for a theologically convincing 'Reform of the Reform' need to be developed. | ||
