Zusammenfassung: | This article intends to develop the principal points at which William of Ockham approaches the subject of grief and sadness from the thinker's writings. Grief and sadness are understood as passions of the sensitive soul and will, respectively. Ockham shows that the passions derive from either an apprehension of the senses or an apprehension of the will and, in most cases, are beyond the control of the human mind. It is precisely for this reason that it is important that the passions (such as grief and sadness) are guided by ethics, in which right reason is a fundamental element, along with one's will and the concurrence of other circumstances. According to this perspective, the passions do not need to be annihilated or rejected in order to acquire meaning in human life. |
