The paper proceeds in three steps. First, an analysis of the problem, with a particular regard to the European context, is provided by exploring some examples of the contemporary threats to democracy. Second, a number of approaches are outlined based on theological resources in order to address the problem constructively and to build resilience. Finally, an argument is made that hope represents the criterion that should give orientation and sustain Christian deliberation on and engagement in society, including political life. While shaped by the Protest background and affiliation of its author and written from the post-communist, Central European context, this paper strives for a wider ecumenical outlook and engagement, seeking a broader relevance and implications beyond the boundaries of Christian churches. | ||
