De l’autre, le doute prend la forme d’un scrupule paralysant qu’il faut éviter par l’obéissance. Ainsi, le doute oscille entre la conscience et la loi. Symptôme d’une angoisse spirituelle, ce doute à deux facettes est une épreuve assumée par le confesseur à la faveur du pénitent. Sa redécouverte, avec ses forces et ses limites, est une ressource contribuant à saisir les enjeux d’un doute qui ouvre au discernement moral et laisse de l’espace à la grâce, à la croisée des théologies morale et spirituelle. | ||

On the one hand, his moral theology is built on and through the doubt of conscience: it unfolds, according to the casuistic method, in a catalogue of disputed cases that provide the uncertain conscience with opinions on which to rely in order to regain the certainty necessary for action. On the other hand, doubt takes the form of a paralysing scruple that must be avoided through obedience; doubt thus oscillates between conscience and the law. A symptom of spiritual anguish, this double-faceted doubt is a trial assumed by the confessor for the benefit of the penitent. Its rediscovery, with its strengths and limitations, is a resource that can help us to grasp what is at stake in a doubt that opens the way to moral discernment and leaves room for grace, at the crossroads of moral and spiritual theologies. | ||
