Ce psaume a fait l'objet de nombreux commentaires, dans l'exégèse juive comme dans l'exégèse chrétienne. La lecture rabbinique met en relief le paradoxe de la condition de l'exil, entre deuil et construction de la vie, entre l'impossibilité de chanter et sa nécessité. L'exégèse patristique élargit la signifi cation de psaume en parlant de la captivité de toute l'humanité, la terre étrangère étant l'exil de l'âme qui ne peut se retourner vers Dieu, les fl euves de Babylone représentant les biens matériels et passagers auxquels l'homme s'attache ; les Pères interprètent également tropologiquement les détails du psaume, comme les fl euves et les saules. Au Moyen Âge, les exégètes chrétiens font un lien entre ce psaume et Jérémie, en s'interrogeant sur son contexte historique ; après une analyse sémantique et rhétorique, ils se livrent eux aussi à une exégèse spirituelle, utilisant notamment la forme de la distinctio (signifi cations spirituelles liées à un mot). Dans les commentaires protestants du XVIe siècle, la démarche la plus frappante est l'actualisation, le psaume étant appliqué aux Huguenots en exil, y compris dans leur propre pays ; la part de la philologie est grande.
