| Zusammenfassung: | This paper wants to examine the understanding of the concept death in the works of the Spanish mystic John of the Cross. The investigation makes a broad view of the uses of the term in the friar’s writings to glimpse its characteristic features, starting with an approach to the historical context that could influence the idea that formed about it. Mainly, grammatical, semantic, and theological elements are used to show the scope the author gives to death in the physical experience and particularly spiritual experience. The paper also shows the constant duality between life and death in John, as well as the double meaning, negative and positive, that the term has, both to speak of physical death and to speak of spiritual death, and its particularity since that for his death can be synonymous with life and the object of love. Este artículo quiere examinar la comprensión del concepto muerte en las obras del místico español Juan de la Cruz. La investigación realiza una mirada panorámica de los usos del término en los escritos del fraile para vislumbrar sus características, partiendo de un acercamiento al contexto histórico que pudo influir en la idea que se formó acerca de ella. Principalmente se recurre a elementos gramaticales, semánticos y teológicos para mostrar el alcance que el autor da a la muerte en la experiencia humana y particularmente en la experiencia espiritual. El artículo también muestra la dualidad entre la vida y la muerte en Juan, así como el doble significado, negativo y positivo, que tiene del término, tanto para hablar de la muerte física, como para hablar de la muerte espiritual y sus particularidades, ya que para él la muerte puede ser sinónimo de vida y objeto del amor. |
