Gegenwärtig mehren sich allerdings Stimmen, die die Kirche des Wortes, jedenfalls in ihrer volkskirchlichen Gestalt, am Ende sehen. Manche plädieren dafür, auf den Begriff der Kirche zu verzichten und stattdessen lieber nur noch von vielfältigen Gestalten des Christseins als Lebensform zu sprechen. Das vorliegende Buch nennt Gründe, weshalb auch das Christentum von morgen nicht ohne den Begriff Kirche auskommt, so plural seine heutigen und künftigen Gestalten auch sein mögen. | ||

In spite of all confessional differences, this position constitutes the shared fundamental conviction of the churches which emerged from the Reformation of the 16th century. Nevertheless, in the present context, many voices claim that the church of the Word, at least as it is embodied by national churches, has come to an end. Some propose to give up on the concept of the church altogether and would rather speak of diverse instantiations of Christianity as a form of life.
