Later on, in Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum, Pseudo-Philo describes Moses as one who was born circumcised. The idea can be traced, possibly, also to the Fourth Gospel, which makes an analogy between a sick man and an uncircumcised man. It was developed the most, however, in Midrashim which listed several renowned biblical figures, and claimed that they were born circumcised. One can better appreciate these homilies specifically against the historical background of the events in the Land of Israel in the second half of the first and the first half of the second centuries CE, that is, the dispute with the Pauline Christianity concerning circumcision and the Hadrianic ban of circumcision. | ||

Früheste Spuren dieses Gedankens finden sich in jenem Abschnitt des Buches der Jubiläen, der von Antiochus IV Epiphanes’ Beschneidungsverbot berichtet. Einige Zeit später erwähnt der Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum des Pseudo-Philo, dass auch Moses schon bei seiner Geburt beschnitten gewesen sei. Ebenso darf man wohl den Vers des Johannes-Evangeliums, der eine Analogie zwischen einem Kranken und einem Unbeschnittenen herstellt, im Sinn des obengenannten Gedankens verstehen. Ihre deutlichste Gestalt findet dieses Konzept jedoch in den Midraschim, die eine Reihe wohlbekannter biblischer Figuren aufzählen, die als bereits Beschnittene geboren seien. Man wird diese Homilien besser verstehen und schätzen, wenn man sie vor dem Hintergrund der historischen Ereignisse im Land Israel in der zweiten Hälfte des ersten und der ersten Hälfte des zweiten Jahrhunderts, der Auseinandersetzungen zwischen traditionsverhaftetem Judentum und paulinischem Christentum und dem Beschneidungsverbot des Hadrian betrachtet. | ||
