Trois étapes se succèdent : la première, qui caractérise la période préconciliaire, définit l’appartenance à l’Église suivant des critères objectifs liés au baptême et à la pratique - qui permettent d’établir une séparation stricte entre le monde et l’Église. Le second moment, qui trouve son point de cristallisation dans l’événement conciliaire, admet de définir l’identité chrétienne de manière plus poreuse en la soustrayant aux disciplines unitives propres à l’époque antérieure. Depuis la fin du pontificat de Paul VI, la théologie de la communion détermine une voie intermédiaire : si le magistère engage les fidèles à dialoguer avec le monde pluraliste, c’est dans le cadre d’une axiologie attachée à la souveraineté persistante de la morale objective établie par le magistère. La sociologie des religions permet-elle de rendre compte de cette évolution ? La réponse ici proposée est clairement positive. On la voit accompagner les trois moments théologiques : elle a, dans un premier temps, rendu compte de l’affiliation en mesurant les pratiques exigeantes de l’appartenance. Sont venues ensuite, alors que l’institution se montrait plus accueillante au « christianisme diasporique », les enquêtes ciblées sur la subjectivation du croire. L’époque actuelle la voit se construire du côté d’une analyse des retours du croire. Entre les deux disciplines se noue, de la sorte, une relation dialectique : la sociologie décrit les effets de la théologie ; éclairant le magistère, elle est aussi l’un des facteurs de son évolution. | ||
| 520 | |a This contribution studies the conception of religious affiliation developed by the Catholic Church since the Second World War. This is developed in three stages: the first, which characterizes the pre-conciliar period, defines membership in the Church according to objective criteria linked to baptism and practice - which make it possible to establish a strict separation between the world and the Church. The second, which is crystallized in the conciliar event of Vatican II, allows us to define Christian identity in a more porous way by removing it from the unitive disciplines specific to the previous era. Since the end of the pontificate of Paul VI, the theology of communion has determined an intermediate path: if the magisterium engages the faithful to dialogue with the pluralist world, it is within the framewwork of an axiology attached to the persistent sovereignty of objective morality established by the magisterium. Does the sociology of religions allow us to account for this evolution? The answer proposed here is clearly positive. It accompanies the three theological phases: it initially took into account affiliation by measuring the demanding practices of the institution. Then, while the institution had become more welcoming to ‘diasporic Christianity’, there were targeted surveys on the individualisation of belief. The current era sees it being built around an analysis of the ‘revenge of God’. A dialectical relationship is thus formed between the two disciplines: sociology describes the effects of theology; illuminating the magisterium, it is also one of the factors in its evolution. | ||
