520 |a Thomas Bernhard's novel Das Kalkwerk (1970) is analyzed in terms of the discursive conflict between two historico-philosophical 'languages' and related to the mimetic violence and the crisis of metanarrative universalistic schemes discussed in current postmodern theory. The multileveled "rhetoric" of the text is interpreted as the unfolding of an agonistic and heightened indeterminacy that places traditional hermeneutical and critical strategies into question. Finally, the essay attempts to position Bernhard's text within the context of postmodern language theory and the crisis of narrative discourse.
