Exigeant dans leur fidélité à l’Église (ils rompent avec le gallicanisme et s’engagent résolument dans la défense de l’ultramontanisme), ils se battent pour construire une société où les libertés leur paraissent maltraitées par l’esprit révolutionnaire qui, à la suite de Rousseau et de Robespierre, sacrifient volontiers la liberté pour l’égalité. Rompant des lances politiques et sociétales sur les libertés de la presse, de l’enseignement, des associations etc., ils sont de tous les combats d’avant-garde des 19e et 20e siècles. Majoritairement gagnants sur tous ces sujets, ils échoueront, en revanche, sur la source des libertés. « Dieu libre qui crée l’homme libre » est ignoré dans la construction politique et sociale française dès la fin du 19e siècle, ce sera la laïcité qui l’emportera avec sa composante athée. Les héritiers de Lamennais et de Lacordaire devront alors trouver des lieux où faire vivre à la fois la source et les effets de la liberté. Les Dominicains français en seront un des lieux les plus stimulants. | ||
| 520 | |a At the beginning of the 19th century, liberal Catholics tried to rebuild the Church in France, not by returning to an idealized or nostalgic past, but by considering the evolution of the post-revolutionary society. Having a demanding fidelity to the Church (they broke with Gallicanism and resolutely committed themselves to the defense of ultramontanism), they fought to build a society where freedoms seemed to them to be abused by the revolutionary spirit which, following Rousseau and Robespierre, willingly sacrificed freedom for equality. Breaking political and societal chains concerning the freedoms of the press, education, associations, etc., they took part in all the avant-garde battles of the 19th and 20th centuries. Most of them won on all these subjects, but they failed, on the other hand, concerning the source of freedoms. The « free God who creates the free man » is ignored in the French political and social construction from the end of the 19th century. Secularism will prevail with its atheistic component. The heirs of Lamennais and Lacordaire will then have to find places where the source and effects of freedom can be experienced. The French Dominicans will be one such most stimulating places. | ||
