Seul le texte judéo-chrétien mettrait radicalement en question ce qui est au fondement de l'ordre social, à savoir le «sacrifice». On peut cependant se demander si l'identification que Girard opère entre le social et le religieux ne procède pas d'un principe très massif — qui est qu'une utilisation même restreinte de la violence ne change rien à la violence originaire — et si l'hypothèse ainsi présentée n'écrase pas les différences que l'auteur lui-même met en évidence lorsqu'il décrit les diverses institutions sociales. According to Girard, society is based on a «mecanism» of expulsion of an arbitrary victim. This hypothesis enables one to give an account — in his view — not only of the primitive religious phenomenon (with its prohibitions and its rites), but also of all human culture (and particularly of legal and political systems). Only the Judaeo-Christian text radically questions that which is at the base of the social order, namely the «sacrifice». However, one may wonder whether the identification brought about by Girard between the social and the religious phenomenon does not proceed from a very crushing principle — which is that even a restrained use of violence does nothing to change original violence — and whether the hypothesis presented in this way does not destroy the differences which the author himself brings out when he describes the various social institutions. | ||
