Description
Item Description:Title from spine. - The diary is listed in "The Phillipps Manuscripts," 1968 reprint, p. 83, in the section Lord Guildford's MSS, no. 5069: "Diarii di Gualdi, 2 vols." (second item in auction, lot 63). - The diary was written on 20-leaf fascicles, mostly in brown ink. The leaves are written on both sides. Those of the year 1651 are numbered from 416 to 492, continuing the pagination of the first volume, presumably containing the previous 5 years. The pagination of each of the following years starts from 1: 118 leaves in 1652, 75 in 1653, 108 in 1654, and 106 in 1655 (which stops on June 30). The volume comprises ca. 1000 written pages, and ca. 40 blank pages, most of which are at the end of the diary. - Binding: old parchment over pasteboard; title on spine in brown ink, and two labels with the Phillipps inventory number. Bookplate of Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guildford, centered on the front pastedown; ex libris stamp of the Cardinal Giuseppe Renato Imperiali on the title page of the 1654 diary - wrongly bound at the beginning of the volume, followed by 1655, then 1651, 1652 and 1653
