Built in 1739, showing place struck by cannon ball fired by Lord Dunmore in 1776. - Old St. Paul's Church has been pronounced the most picturesque Episcopal church in America. It was built in 1739. The church was struck and partially burned during the bombardment of Norfolk, January 1, 1776 by Lord Dunmore, the last of the English Governors of Virginia, who had taken refuge on the British ships lying in the James River. The cannon ball imbedded in its wall remains where it struck on that day
