| Item Description: | This interior view of the Oldest Church in U.S.A. (1610) shows the hand-carved wooden "reredos" or altar backdrop (1798), the three-hundred-year-old oval oil paintings, the Statue of St. Michael (central niche), which with La Conquistador and an image of the Christ Child was given prominence at the official reentry of De Vargas into Santa Fe (1693), the wooden-carved stations of the cross and the paintings on buffalo hide and on deer skin (circs 1630). The church has been in use for religious services, weddings, and christenings since it was built in 1610. The Christian Brothers are the owners of the San Miguel Mission. Members of the world-wide teaching order of Brothers welcome visitors and conduct short, free tours daily, from 8:30 to 11:30 A.M. and 1:00 to 5:30 P.M |
