Item Description:The first outpost of the Episcopal Church planted west of the Blue Ridge in North Carolina was the parish of St. John in the Wilderness. This building was started in 1833 and in 1836 a group met and organized themselves into a congregation. Near the church is a marker erected by the United Daughters of Confederacy in honor of Christopher Gustavus Memminger, who was the First Secretary of the Treasury of the Confederate States of America.
