| Item Description: | Old Durham Church is one of the old Colonial churches of Southern Maryland, the Cradle of History, and takes us back before the days of the old Spanish Missions of California. Prince George's Charles and St. Mary's Counties, which are the three counties of Maryland south of Washington, D. C., were divided in 1692 into eight parishes. Durham Parish, the largest in Maryland, extends over 500 square miles, and includes the whole southwestern section of Charles County. The original log church in the same site was built in 1692, and was replaced in 1732 by the present church, which is a fine example of ancient brickwork known as Flemish bond. Pilgrims to Washington and to the National Cathedral should visit also these ancient, nearby shrines where the Mother Church of England had its new beginnings in the old Maryland Colony.
