Item Description: | This Church is one of the three oldest Methodist Churches in America. It is located on the old State Road between the towns of Magnolia and Frederica, one mile from the latter and four miles from the former, in Kent County, Delaware. - It is called the "Cradle of Methodism" because here on November 14, 1784, Bishop Thomas Coke, sent by Rev. John Wesley, met Rev. Francis Asbury, who was Mr. Wesley's appointed leader in the colonies. Bishop Coke here consulted with Mr. Asbury and it resulted in the organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church. - It is called Barratt's Chapel from Phillip Barratt, who gave the land and large means for its building, in 1780. Here the Lord's Supper was first administered by a regularly ordained Methodist preacher |
