500 |a In the year 1884 a group of 15 dedicated persons organized First Methodist Church as an out-growth of the Tent Meeting held in Long Beach in 1883. Thus the first organized church came into being when a pastor was appointed at the Fall Conference of 1884. A Chapel and Tabernacle was erected at Third and Locust, which housed the Methodist congregation and the annual Methodist Camp Meeting each summer. In 1898 a church was built at Fifth and Pine and completed in December, 1899. By 1906 the facilities were inadequate and the present Sanctuary was begun in 1907. In 1965 the present Education Building and Fellowship Hall was dedicated. Steady growth has marked the history of First Methodist. Indeed, it has grown with and for the City of Long Beach as its First Church
