There was a clear tendency to support the Confessing Church, and the diaspora workers' clear statements against the German Christians were equally striking. Thus, the diaspora work in these lowlands stood in striking contrast to the Moravian settlement congregations in particular, in which criticism of National Socialism was rare and in some cases it was welcomed with enthusiasm. Four factors that contributed to this difference can be identified. A first point was the social situation of the diaspora brethren and sisters, since the peasant milieu that characterized their life in the lowlands was less affected by the crises of the 1920s than life in the settlements, which was dominated by craftsmen. A second point was the organization of the diaspora work, which was largely carried out by lay people. Although there were diaspora workers and assistants, much of the work was directed by lay worship leaders. Thus, a certain opposition to the conservative, anti-modern and anti-liberal forces as they were represented in the church was always present. A third point that makes the evaluation of National Socialism in the lowlands seem so different from that in the settlement congregations is the strong emphasis on youth work, especially through the Brüderischer Jugendbund (Moravian Youth Guild). A fourth point is that no conflicts arose between the church leadership and the diaspora brothers and sisters. This study pays particular attention to the changes in the years 1933 to 1936. In conclusion, the diaspora work in the lowlands is presented in maps and statistics. | ||
