Summary: | The post-mortem sections of Moravian memoirs that are added by a third hand are of especial significance from the point of view of medical history. Up to the end of the 19th century, the dying process and the diseases underlying it were described in detail. This makes it possible to draw statistical conclusions about tuberculosis mortality in the choir houses. Based on 183 memoirs of the single sisters' choir in Gnadau, it can be established that the mortality from tuberculosis in the Moravian choir houses far exceeded that of the normal population. Until 1882 it was not known that tuberculosis was an infectious disease. The decisive factor for the high mortality rate was not hygienic deficiencies but the high pathogen density in the collective living and working spaces. For comparison, statistics from five Catholic convents in Tyrol and Vorarlberg, which also describe such a connection, were used. In the present study, tuberculosis mortality in Moravian choir houses is recorded statistically for the first time. |
