As peace became perceived as something that concerned not only the intra-community sphere, and its horizon shifted from eschatology to history, the problem of war arose in terms of the 'government' of violence, the expression of an imperfect world. The recognition of the providential role played by the empire in facilitating the spread of the gospel message led to a dampening of latent opposition to it and, as a consequence, the adoption of the intra-worldly sphere as the context within which to operate to ensure its support.
