AB Der Kulturkampf, also die Auseinandersetzung des deutschen Reichs mit der katholischen Kirche in den 1870er und 1880er Jahren, war ein epochales Ereignis. Er hat die Beziehung zwischen den Konfessionen und das Verhältnis von Staat und Religion in Deutschland nachhaltig geprägt und markierte eine grundsätzliche Krise der Modernisierung, wenn nicht gar ein tiefliegendes Problem des säkularen Liberalismus im Umgang mit religiöser und kultureller Differenz. Die Beiträge diskutieren die Konfliktkonstellationen des historischen Kulturkampfs und seine breiten Wirkungen im öffentlichen Diskurs. AB The Kulturkampf, the conflict between the German Reich and the Catholic Church in the 1870s and 1880s, was an epochal event. It had a lasting impact on the relationship between the denominations and the relationship between the state and religion in Germany and marked a fundamental crisis of modernisation, if not a deep-seated problem of secular liberalism in dealing with religious and cultural differences. The contributions in this book discuss the constellations of conflict in the historical Kulturkampf and its broad impact on public discourse.
