While the Roman Empire had declined, the stable "spine" of European society was the Catholic Church herself, which through her hierarchy was up and doing in order to accomplish that mission which was received from our Lord Jesus Christ: to serve the salvation, proclaim the Gospel and administer the sacraments under the leadership of successors of the apostles. This mission was realized by the bishop in close cooperation with the unified presbyterial college and other clerics at the episcopal see. Therefore, the presbyteral college had been changed for the parish system. Nevertheless, the unity among bishops and the unity between the bishop and his clergy have remained, represented by the different levels of councils and by the cathedral chapters. | ||
