The Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples (CEP), instituted to propagate the Catholic faith, in its missionary journey, among the Protestants and non-Christians, encountered situations that could not have been regulated by the commin law of the Church. Therefore, there was a need for special faculties, with which the Congregation would come to the aid of missionaries and the faithful. Such needs were: celebration of more than one Mass on days of obligation, without which the faithful would not have been able to observe the Church precept; after the Vatican Council II, the CEP had the faculty to permit local Ordinaries up to four Masses on days of obligation. Needs of the missionaries were also economic: Mass offerings were a source of income essential for their sustenance. This study, while gives reasons for the discipline of the Mass offerings, above all aims at highlighting the "journey" of the special faculties of the CEP, from its institution in 1622 to 2005, when some of the faculties were last confirmed, regarding the discipline of the Mass. | ||
